Stocks are listed on the market by short names known as ticker symbols.
NYSE:APLE? NASDAQ:MSFT? NASDAQ:GOOGL? Do any of those names ring a bell? Ticker symbols may look like hieroglyphics, but they’re actually pretty easy to get your head around. The first part of the title relates to the stock exchange (NYSE – New York Stock Exchange) and the second refers to the company (APLE – Apple). When you search the ticker symbol “MSFT” on Google or your broker’s website, the result will be the most recent price investors have paid for Microsoft shares.
Tips and tricks
The ticker is the simplest way to research a company and their stock prices. This is because the ticker is consistently used by websites from every corner of Earth – regardless of language.
